Solution
- Following the 1989 elections, the Congress lost, but no other party won the most seats. The Congress had many votes in the Lok Sabha, but it did not have a clear majority. It still chose to sit in the opposition, though.
- After losing the 1989 election, the National Front formed a government with support from the Left Front and the BJP, two parties with very different views.
- So began a time when our country had more than one political party. It was the start of several parties.
- Since then, no single party has won more than half of the seats in the Lok Sabha. During this period, regional parties have been very important in forming winning coalitions.
