Analyse the changes that took place during a long phase of coalition politics in India since 1989.

1. Following the 1989 elections, the Congress lost, but no other party won the most seats. The Congress had many votes in the Lok Sabha, but it did not have a clear majority. It still chose to sit in the opposition, though.
2. After losing the 1989 election, the National Front formed a government with support from the Left Front and the BJP, two parties with very different views.
3. So began a time when our country had more than one political party. It was the start of several parties.
4. Since then, no single party has won more than half of the seats in the Lok Sabha. During this period, regional parties have been very important in forming winning coalitions.
