= 8 h 30 min

Lunch break = 30 min

Ratio of lunch break to the total period = `(30 min)/(8 h  30 min)`

= `(30 min)/((8 xx 60 + 30) min)`   ...[∵ 1 h = 60 min]

= `(30 min)/(510 min)`

= `1/17`  ...[On dividing numerator and denominator by 30]

= 1 : 17
