Solution

Given: A rectangular field 250 m by 250 m with two roads, each 5 m wide, drawn through the middle one parallel to the length and the other parallel to the breadth.

Step-wise calculation:

1. Area of the vertical road

= length × width

= 250 × 5

= 1250 m2

2. Area of the horizontal road

= breadth × width

= 250 × 5

= 1250 m2

3. The two roads overlap in a square of side 5 m; overlap area

= 5 × 5

= 25 m2

4. Total area of the roads

= 1250 + 1250 – 25

= 2475 m2

The area of the roads is 2475 m2.
