Solution

A man was engaged as typist for the month of February in 2009.

He was paid Rs. 500 per day but Rs. 100 per day were deducted for the days he remained absent.

He received Rs. 9,100 as salary for the month.

We have to find the number of days he worked.

Let the number of days a man worked in the month of February be x days.

Payment per day = Rs. 500

Total payment for working days = 500(x)

2009 is not a leap years

Number of days in the month of February = 28 days

Number of days absent in the month of February = 28 − x days

Payment deducted for being absent = 100(28 − x)

Salary received for the month = Rs. 9100

500x - 100(28 − x) = 9100

500x - 2800 + 100x = 9100

600x - 2800 = 9100

By transposing,

600x = 9100 + 2800

600x = 11900

x = `11900/600`

x = `119/6`

x = 19.83

x = 20

Therefore, the number of days a man worked is 20 days.
