Solution

Given: A floor 20 m × 8 m and tiles 50 cm × 25 cm.

Step-wise calculation:

1. Floor area

= 20 m × 8 m

= 160 m2

2. Convert tile size to metres:

50 cm = 0.5 m

25 cm = 0.25 m

3. Tile area

= 0.5 m × 0.25 m

= 0.125 m2

Alternatively:

Floor = 160 × 10,000

= 16,00,000 cm2

Tile = 50 × 25

= 1,250 cm2

16,00,000 ÷ 1,250

= 1,280

4. Number of tiles

= Floor area ÷ Tile area

= 160 ÷ 0.125

= 1,280

1,280 tiles are required.
