Question
800 cm3 of gas is collected at 654 mm pressure. At what pressure would the volume of the gas reduce by 40% of its original volume, the temperature remaining constant?

Solution
Given:
V = 800 cm3
P = 654 mm
P1= ?
V1 = reduced volume = 40% of 800
= `(80 xx 40)/100`
= 320
Net V1 = 800 − 320
= 480 cm3
T = T1
Using the gas equation,
`(PV)/T = (P_1 V_1)/T_1`
`(800 xx 654)/T = (P_1 xx 480)/T_1`
Since T = T1
`P_1 = (800 xx 654)/480`
= 1090 mm of Hg.
