Question

272 calories of heat energy is required to heat 0.02 kg of a metal of specific heat capacity 170 cal kg−1°C−1 to a temperature T. If the initial temperature of the metal is 20°C, calculate the final temperature T.

Solution

Given: m = 0.02 kg, c = 170 cal kg−1°C−1, Q = 272 cal

Heat gained by the metal (Q) = mcΔT

$$\Delta T = \frac{Q}{mc}$$

$$= \frac{272}{0.02 \times 170}$$

= 80°C

Final temperature T = 20°C + 80°C = 100°C
