Question

0.120 kg of copper of specific heat capacity 100 calkg−1°C−1 and at 20°C is heated by a burner for two minutes, which supplies heat energy at a rate of 20 calories/sec. Calculate the final temperature of the copper.

Solution

Let rise in temperature = θR

Heat supplied to copper \[=\frac{20 \mathrm{cal}}{\mathrm{~s}} \times 120 \mathrm{~s}\] = 2400 cal

Also, Heat supplied = mcθR

2400 cal = 0.12 kg × 100 calkg−1°C−1 × θR

\[\therefore \theta_{R} =\frac{2400}{0.12 \times 100^{\circ} \mathrm{C}}\]

= 200°C

Final temperature of copper = 20°C + 200°C = 220°C
