Let the number be x.
Then, one-third of the number = `1/3 x`.
According to the question,
`1/3 x - 1 = 1`
⇒ `1/3 x = 1 + 1` ...[Transposing (–1) to RHS]
⇒ `1/3x = 2`
⇒ x = 3 × 2 ...[Multiplying both sides by 3]
⇒ x = 6
Hence, the required number is 6.
