उत्तर

Prism-produced Deviation is the bending of a light beam away from its intended path. Ray AB would have followed the path if there had been no prism. ABDF, but the prism has forced the light ray to bend twice in the direction of the prism's base, and the emerging beam EK seems to be coming from DEK.

Cause: When light travels from one medium to another, in this example, from air to a glass prism, its speed changes. This change in speed causes the light to deflect and enter the new medium glass at a different angle.

Which colour of light has a higher critical angle? Red light or green light.

Name two factors which affect the critical angle for a given pair of media. State how do the factors affect it.

Two isosceles right-angle glass prisms P and Q are placed near each other as shown in Fig. Complete the path of the light ray entering the prism P till it emerges out of the prism Q.

Define critical angle and explain total internal reflection. What are the conditions necessary for total internal reflection?

State two advantages of using a right-angle prism as a reflector, rather than a plane mirror.

Under what conditions are total internal reflection possible? Explain it with a suitable example.

Solve Numerical example.

A monochromatic ray of light is incident at 37° on an equilateral prism of refractive index 3/2. Determine angle of emergence and angle of deviation. If angle of prism is adjustable, what should its value be for emergent rays to be just possible for the same angle of incidence?

The angle made by incident ray of light with normal of the reflecting surface is called ______.

  • Assertion (A): Propagation of light through an optical fibre is due to total internal reflection taking place at the core-cladding interface.
  • Reason (R): Refractive index of the material of the cladding of the optical fibre is greater than that of the core.
