उत्तर

Photograph   Image in a Plane Mirror
A photograph is made when a real image is projected on a photographic film. The image formed by a plane mirror is virtual and cannot be taken on a photograph.
The image is smaller in size compared to the actual object. The image is the same size as the object.

If an object is placed at a distance of 10 cm in from of a plane mirror, how far would it be from its image?

A wall reflects light and a mirror also reflects light. What difference is three in the way they reflect light?

Which type of reflection of light leads to the formation of images?

Define the following terms used in the study of reflection of light by drawing a labelled ray-diagram:

(a) Incident ray
(b) Point of incidence
(c) Normal
(d) Reflected ray
(e) Angle of incidence
(f) Angle of reflection

The image in a plane mirror is virtual and laterally inverted. What does this statement mean?

Explain how to read the following message which was found on some blotting paper:

Light travels more quickly through water than through glass.

Which is optically denser : water or glass?

Show the lateral displacement of the ray on the diagram.

A ray of light passes from a medium X to another medium Y. No refraction of light occurs if the ray of light hits the boundary of medium Y at an angle of:

(a) 0°
(b) 45°
(c) 90°
(d) 120°

Water is optically denser than glass.

Water is optically .......... than air.

A real image is formed by the light rays after reflection or refraction when they:

  1. actually meet or intersect with each other.
  2. actually converge at a point.
  3. appear to meet when they are produced in the backward direction.
  4. appear to diverge from a point.

Which of the above statements are correct?

Identify the wrong figure from the following.

The speed of light varies in different media.

Write scientific reason.

The coin disappears in a vessel as it is seen from a specific location. But as soon as the water is poured into the vessel to a certain level, the coin appears.

State whether true or false. If false, correct the statement.

The angle of deviation depends on the refractive index of the glass.

Numerical problems.

The speed of light in water is 2.25 × 108 ms–1. If the speed of light in vacuum is 3 × 108 ms–1, calculate the refractive index of water.

Noor, a young student, was trying to demonstrate some properties of light in her Science project work. She kept ‘X’ inside the box (as shown in the figure) and with the help of a laser pointer made light rays pass through the holes on one side of the box. She had a small butter-paper screen to see the spots of light being cast as they emerged.

Her friend noted the following observations from this demonstration:

  1. Glass is optically rarer than air.
  2. Air and glass allow light to pass through them with the same velocity.
  3. Air is optically rarer than glass.
  4. Speed of light through a denser medium is faster than that of a rarer medium.
  5. The ratio: sin of angle of incidence in the first medium to the ratio of sin of angle of refraction in the second medium, gives the refractive index of the second material with respect to the first one.

Which one of the combinations of the above statements given below is correct.

How does the light travel?
