उत्तर

a and c

Explanation:

If the law of gravitation becomes an inverse cube law. then we can write, for a planet of mass m revolving around the sun of mass M,

F = `(GMm)/a^3 = (mv^2)/a`  .....(Where a is the radius of orbiting planet)

⇒ v = orbital speed = `sqrt(GM)/a`

⇒ `v ∝ 1/a`

Time period of revolution of a planet T = `(2πa)/v = (2πa)/(sqrt(GM)/a) = (2πa^2)/sqrt(GM)`

⇒ `T^2 ∝ a^4`

Hence, the orbit will not be elliptical.   .....[For elliptical orbit T2 ∝ a3]

As force F = `((GM)/a^3)m = g m`

Where, `g^' = (GM)/a^3`

As g', acceleration due to gravity is constant, hence path followed by a projectile will be approximately parabolic. (as T ∝ a2)

A tunnel  is dug along a chord of the earth at a perpendicular distance R/2 from the earth's centre. The wall of the tunnel may be assumed to be frictionless. Find the force exerted by the wall on a particle of mass m when it is at a distance x from the centre of the tunnel.

A thin spherical shell having uniform density is cut in two parts by a plane and kept separated as shown in the following figure. The point A is the centre of the plane section of the first part and B is the centre of the plane section of the second part. Show that the gravitational field at A due to the first part is equal in magnitude to the gravitational field at B due to the second part.

To project the rockets which of the following principle(s) is /(are) required?

Different points in earth are at slightly different distances from the sun and hence experience different forces due to gravitation. For a rigid body, we know that if various forces act at various points in it, the resultant motion is as if a net force acts on the c.m. (centre of mass) causing translation and a net torque at the c.m. causing rotation around an axis through the c.m. For the earth-sun system (approximating the earth as a uniform density sphere).

How is the gravitational force between two point masses affected when they are dipped in water keeping the separation between them the same?

The gravitational force between a hollow spherical shell (of radius R and uniform density) and a point mass is F. Show the nature of F vs r graph where r is the distance of the point from the centre of the hollow spherical shell of uniform density.

Shown are several curves (Figure). Explain with reason, which ones amongst them can be possible trajectories traced by a projectile (neglect air friction).

Observe the figure and answer the questions:

  1. State Newton's universal law of gravitation.
  2. If the distance between the two bodies is tripled, how will the gravitational force between them change?
  3. What will happen to gravitational force, if mass of one of the object is doubled?
