Because training will be provided in the actual work environment, which is O.T in this case, it is referred to as on-the-job training. Under this strategy, employees are assigned a specific job to learn.

Perform the job in the actual work scenario. It's also known as Learning by Doing. Employees learn work methods under senior supervision through on-the-job training, including:

  1. Coaching or mentoring: Involves the supervisor instructing and guiding the student. The individual receives job-specific training from their boss.
  2. Under Study: The student receives training from a senior, experienced employee. The goal is to prepare the trainee to fill a vacancy due to the retirement or promotion of the current trainer.
  3. Assistant to: In this method the trainee is placed as an assistant to a senior executive of the firm. Initially, the senior executive entrusts him with the routine work and guides him to perform the job.
  4. Job rotation: In this method the trainee is periodically rotated from job to job. The purpose is to broaden his outlook and give a general background of different jobs.
  5. Apprenticeship Training: This method is used in technical trades and crafts in which a long period (ranging from two to seven years) is required to become proficient. The worker is attached to an experienced or senior employee.

What do you mean by on the job training?


Mr. Pawan Kumar, the CEO of an E-Commerce start up, which was facing the problem of huge employee turnover, decided to hold a meeting with the managers to discuss the issue. The company can create a mechanism that attempts to measure certain characteristics of individuals like aptitude, manual dexterity, and intelligence to personality. The candidate may then be called for an in-depth conversation to evaluate their suitability for the job.
