प्रश्न

A piece of wire having a resistance R is cut into five equal parts.

  1. How will the resistance of each part of the wire change compared with the original resistance?
  2. If the five parts of the wire are placed in parallel, how will the resistance of the combination change?
  3. What will be ratio of the effective resistance in series connection to that of the parallel connection?

उत्तर

  1. Consider a piece of wire having resistance R. It was cut into 5 equal parts. So number of equal resistors is 5. n = 5
When ‘n’ resistors of equal resistance R are connected in series, the equivalent resistance is ‘nR’
    RS = nR
    ⇒ RS = 5R
    ⇒ R = `R_s/5`
    ⇒ R = 0.2 RS
Each part of resistance ‘R’ is equal to 0.2 times the original resistance.
  2. Effective Resistance of 5 Resistors
    `1/R_P = 1/R + 1/R + 1/R + 1/R + 1/R = 5/R`
    `R_P = R/5` = 0.2 R
  3. Effective resistance of series combination RS = 5R
    Effective resistance of parallel combination
    `R_P = R/5`
The ratio of series connection to the parallel connection
    `R_S/R_P = (5 R)/(R//S)`
    (2) (9 - R2 - + R2) = (9 - R2)R2
    `R_S/R_P = 5 R xx 5/R = 25`
    RS : RP = 25 : 1

How many 176 Ω resistors (in parallel) are required to carry 5 A on a 220 V line?

Show how you would connect two 4 ohm resistors to produce a combined resistance of (a) 2 ohms (b) 8 ohms.

An electric heater which is connected to a 220 V supply line has two resistance coils A and B of 24 Ω resistance each. These coils can be used separately (one at a time), in series or in parallel. Calculate the current drawn when:

(a) only one coil A is used.
(b) coils and B are used in series.
(c) coils and B are uses in parallel.

A resistor of 8 ohms is connected in parallel with another resistor X. The resultant resistance of the combination is 4.8 ohms. What is the value of the resistor X?

Which of the following combinations have the same equivalent resistance between X and Y?

You have three resistors of values 2Ω, 3Ω and 5Ω. How will you join them so that the total resistance is less than 1Ω? Draw diagram and find the total resistance.

Five resistors, each 3 Ω, are connected as shown in Fig. Calculate the resistance

  1. between the points P and Q.
  2. between the points X and Y.

Two devices are connected between two points say A and B in parallel. The physical quantity that will remain the same between the two points is:

Assertion: When a battery is short circuited, the terminal voltage is zero.

Reason: In a short circuit, the current is zero.

Two resistors of resistances 2 Ω and 3 Ω are connected in parallel to a cell to draw current 0.5 A from the cell. Draw a labelled diagram of the arrangement
