On hearing the church bells send out a message to him, Dick decided to retrace his steps and go back to Mr. Fitzwarren's house instead of running away. This decision changed Dick's fortune. The decision taken by Dick that changed his fortune was choosing to invest his last bit of money in buying a cat. In the story of Dick Whittington and His Cat, Dick sends his cat on a trading ship to a faraway land, where the cat ends up being very valuable for controlling a rat problem for a wealthy king. This unexpected turn of events brings Dick great wealth, changing his life and fortune forever.
