उत्तर

Microwaves are used for the ‘Radar’ system. The frequency range of microwaves is from 1 GHz to 2 GHz and
(ii)  Ultraviolet rays (UV rays) are used in eye surgery. The frequency range of UV rays are from 1015 to 1017 Hz

Use the formula λm T= 0.29 cm K to obtain the characteristic temperature ranges for different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. What do the numbers that you obtain tell you?

Given below are some famous numbers associated with electromagnetic radiations in different contexts in physics. State the part of the electromagnetic spectrum to which each belongs.

(a) 21 cm (wavelength emitted by atomic hydrogen in interstellar space).

(b) 1057 MHz (frequency of radiation arising from two close energy levels in hydrogen; known as Lamb shift).

(c) 2.7 K [temperature associated with the isotropic radiation filling all space-thought to be a relic of the ‘big-bang’ origin of the universe].

(d) 5890 Å - 5896 Å [double lines of sodium]

(e) 14.4 keV [energy of a particular transition in 57Fe nucleus associated with a famous high resolution spectroscopic method (Mössbauer spectroscopy)].

A wave has wavelength 50 Å.

  1. Name the wave.
  2. State its speed in vacuum.
  3. State its one use.

The figure shows the intensity-wavelength relations of X-rays coming from two different Coolidge tubes. The solid curve represents the relation for the tube A in which the potential difference between the target and the filament is VA and the atomic number of the target material is ZA. These quantities are VB and ZB for the other tube. Then,

A certain element emits Kα X-ray of energy 3.69 keV. Use the data from the previous problem to identify the element.

(Use Planck constant h = 6.63 × 10-34 Js= 4.14 × 10-15 eVs, speed of light c = 3 × 108 m/s.)

A free atom of iron emits Kα X-rays of energy 6.4 keV. Calculate the recoil kinetic energy of the atom. Mass of an iron atom = 9.3 × 10−26 kg.

(Use Planck constant h = 6.63 × 10-34 Js= 4.14 × 10-15 eVs, speed of light c = 3 × 108 m/s.)

Write the range of the wavelength of the following electromagnetic radiations:
(a) Infrared rays
(b) Ultraviolet rays
(c) γ -rays

Write one use of each of the above.
