Maharashtra State Board: Class 5
Writing half, quarter, three-quarters and one and a quarter in decimal form
‘Half’ is usually written as `"1"/"2"`.
To convert this fraction into decimal form, the denominator of `"1"/"2"` must be converted into an equivalent fraction with denominator 10.
`"1"/"2"` = `"1x5"/"2x5"` = `"5"/"10"` so the decimal form of `"1"/"2"` will be `"5"/"10"` or 0.5
Note that `"1"/"2"` = `"1x50"/"2x50"` = `"50"/"100"` =0.50
Therefore, ‘half’ is written as ‘0.5’ or ‘0.50’.
In a similar manner, ‘Quarter’ and ‘Three quarters’ are written in fractions as `"1"/"4"` and `"3"/"4"` respectively.
Fraction to Decimal Conversion:
| Fraction | Conversion to Hundredths | Decimal Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| A quarter (¼) | `"25"/"100"` | 0.25 |
| Three-quarters (¾) | `"75"/"100"` | 0.75 |
| One and a quarter (1¼) | `"125"/"100"` | 1.25 |
| One and a half (1½) | `"150"/"100"` | 1.50 = 1.5 |
| One and three-quarters (1¾) | `"175"/"100"` | 1.75 |
| Seventeen and a half (17½) | `"1750"/"100"` | 17.50 = 17.5 |
