Magazines and Journals

  • A magazine is a type of large thin book with a paper cover that you can buy every week or month containing articles, photographs, etc. often on a particular topic.  
  • Journals and magazines are periodic publications.  
  • Publications that are published weekly, biweekly, monthly, quarterly, six months, a year, etc. are included in this category. There may be certain chronicles that are released at random intervals. 
  • Balshastri Jambhekar launched the first Marathi monthly magazine. Its name was 'Digdarshan.' 
  • Tryambak Shankar Shejwalkar founded and published 'Pragati,' in 1929 which is now- a non-functioning journal. He frequently contributed to this publication of historical research on social movements in Maharashtra. 
  • Indian history is currently the subject of numerous magazines. 'Bharatiya Itihas ani Samskruti' and 'Marathwada Itihas Parishad Patrika' are two instances of Marathi journals.

History of Mass Media:

  • During the colonial period, the British are credited for introducing participatory journalism or an independent press to India.
  • Since the late 18th century, there have been media outlets in India. Print media was established in 1780, Newspapers were the first form of printed news for people.
  • Newspapers evolved and became the first widely used medium for disseminating information and knowledge.
  • Radio transmission began in 1927, and Auguste and Louis Lumière's motion pictures were first screened in Bombay in July 1895.  It is one of the oldest and biggest forms of media in existence. 
  • Even before Ashoka the Great founded the Indian empire on the tenets of justice, openness, morality, and spirituality, the media in India has been free and autonomous for the majority of its history. 
  • Prime Minister Indira Gandhi established a state of emergency from 1975 to 1977, which was the brief time when the Indian media had to worry about possible government retaliation.

  • Early Newspapers – Newspapers became the first mass medium after the introduction of printing technology.
  • Bengal Gazette (1780) – The first English newspaper in India, started by James Augustus Hickey.
  • Darpan (1832), edited by Balshastri Jambhekar, reported on political, social, and cultural events.
  • Prabhakar – Started by Bhau Mahajan; it published writings that created social awareness.
  • Dnyanoday – First to print maps and illustrations; reported railways, telegraph, and the 1857 revolt.
  • Induprakash & Deenbandhu – Supported social reforms and highlighted issues of common people.
  • Kesari & Maratha (1881) – Started by Tilak and Agarkar; played a major role in the political awakening and the freedom movement.
