Subject: Addressing the Growing Misuse of Artificial Intelligence Tools Among Students

Respected Sir/Madam,

As a senior teacher at Pragati International School, I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the increasing misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) tools by students today. While AI holds immense potential, its current application in the academic sphere is leading to several detrimental trends that require urgent attention.

The most immediate impact we observe is the erosion of critical thinking skills. When students rely on AI to solve complex problems or summarise literature at the click of a button, they bypass the essential cognitive struggle required for deep learning. This is closely followed by a loss of creativity; original thought is being replaced by algorithmic outputs, leading to a homogenisation of ideas. Furthermore, the rise in academic dishonesty where AI-generated essays and assignments are passed off as original work undermines the very foundation of integrity in education.

This trend must be checked before it fundamentally alters the intellectual development of the next generation. It is imperative that we:

  1. Promote Awareness: Educate students on the ethical implications of AI and the long-term value of developing their own mental faculties.
  2. Integrate AI Responsibly: Instead of banning these tools, the education system should integrate them as “tutors” or “research assistants” rather than “creators”.
  3. Reform Assessment: Shift focus towards in-class assessments, oral presentations, and practical applications that AI cannot easily replicate.

AI should be a tool to enhance human potential, not a substitute for it. I hope your esteemed daily will highlight this issue to encourage a dialogue between educators, parents and policymakers.

Yours sincerely,
Nitin Verma
