Oxygen reacts with various non–metals like hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon, sulphur, phosphorus, etc., to give corresponding non–metallic oxides which are generally acidic in nature.
Non–metal + Oxygen → Non–metallic oxide
Example:
C + O₂ → CO₂
