Badminton was first played by British Army officers in Pune around 1860, when it was known as Poona or Poonah. Its name later came from Badminton House, the Duke of Beaufort’s estate in Gloucestershire. The International Badminton Federation was established in 1934; it adopted the name Badminton World Federation in 2006. Badminton’s Olympic journey began as a demonstration event at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. It was included as an exhibition sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Finally, badminton became an official Olympic sport at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. Since then, it has been part of the official Olympic programme.
