Solution

Action of Air: Aluminium reacts with oxygen in air to form a thin, protective layer of aluminium oxide, which prevents further corrosion.

\[\ce{4Al + 3O2 → 2Al2O3}\]

Action of Water: Aluminium does not react with cold water due to its protective oxide layer. It reacts with steam to form aluminium oxide and hydrogen.

\[\ce{2Al + 3H2O → Al2O3 + 3H2}\]

Action of Acids: Aluminium reacts with dilute acids such as hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid to form the corresponding salt and hydrogen gas.

\[\ce{2Al + 6HCl → 2AlCl3 + 3H2}\]

Action of Bases: Aluminium reacts with strong bases such as sodium hydroxide to form sodium aluminate and hydrogen gas.

\[\ce{2Al + 2NaOH + 2H2O → 2NaAlO2 + 3H2}\]

Action of Non-metals: Aluminium reacts with non-metals such as oxygen, chlorine and sulphur on heating to form the corresponding compounds.

\[\ce{2Al + 3Cl2 → 2AlCl3}\]
