Solution
- The Great Escarpment is an important physiographic divide in Brazil.
- It is very steep and occupies a small area. It is classified as a unique physiographic region due to the nature of its slope and its impact on climate.
- The escarpment separates the eastern side of the Highlands. The escarpment is 790 m high here; it progressively decreases in some areas. The escarpment is exceedingly steep, especially from Sao Paulo to Porto Alegre.
- The escarpment acts as a barrier to the south-east trade winds, creating a rain shadow area in the north-east part of the highlands. The region to the north of this is known as the ‘Drought Quadrilateral’.
