Solution

Contribution of Constantine in Popularising Christianity

Constantine the Great was a Roman emperor who played a very important role in the spread and acceptance of Christianity. Before his rule, Christians were often persecuted in the Roman Empire and were not allowed to practise their religion freely.

In 313 CE, Constantine issued the Edict of Milan, which granted religious freedom to Christians and ended their persecution. Christianity was declared a legal religion, and Christians were allowed to worship openly and build churches.

Constantine supported Christianity by providing financial help for the construction of churches, including the famous Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. He also returned confiscated property to Christians.

He convened the Council of Nicaea in 325 CE, which helped bring unity in Christian beliefs and doctrines. Though Christianity did not become the official religion during his reign, Constantine’s policies greatly helped in spreading and strengthening Christianity across the Roman Empire.

Thus, Constantine’s support transformed Christianity from a persecuted faith into a widely accepted and influential religion.
