In India, the Portuguese founded colonies in the following locations:

  1. The Portuguese dominated Goa, Dadra, and Nagar-Haveli during the Indian Independence movement. They wouldn’t give it up. The Goa liberation movement was born out of it.
  2. The ‘Goa Congress Committee’ was established in Mumbai in 1928. This committee was presided over by Dr. T. B. Kunha.
  3. Posters with the message ‘Quit Goa’ were displayed around Goa in 1939. The Indian flag was raised in Goa by Francis Mascarenhas, the president of the United Goan Front.
  4. Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia spearheaded the ‘Civil Disobedience’ campaign in Goa in 1946. Numerous people were taken into custody.
  5. Following his release from prison in Portugal, Dr. Kunha began publishing two newspapers, ‘Azad Goa’ and ‘Swatantra Goa’.
  6. The ‘Goa Vimochan Sahayak Samiti’ was established in Pune in 1954.
  7. The Indian national flag was raised on the Panaji fort by volunteers commanded by Senapati Bapat and N. G. Gore.
  8. Acharya P. K. Atre supported the movement by using his own daily newspaper, ‘Maratha,’ as a platform. Azad Gomantak Dal assisted Mohan Ranade in initiating an armed conflict with the Portuguese.
  9. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru took action in response to the tremendous popular sentiment surrounding the freedom of Goa. Operation Vijay was the code name for the intended mission.
  10. To complete the task, the Indian army landed in Goa. Local residents also provided assistance to the troops. The locations of the landmines planted by the Portuguese were shown to the army. In just two days, the Portuguese submitted.

On 19th December 1961, Goa became a part of the Indian Republic.
