Solution

It was a familiar voice, and this could only mean that my past had finally caught up with me, despite the three years I had spent rebuilding my life in this quiet, coastal town. The voice was low, gravelly, and carried a rhythmic cadence that belonged to none other than Elias Thorne. I stood frozen in the narrow aisle of the local bookstore, my hand still resting on the spine of a weathered novel.

“I always knew you had a penchant for the classics, Julian,” the voice drawled from behind the poetry section. I turned slowly, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. There he stood, looking entirely out of place in his tailored charcoal suit against the backdrop of peeling paint and sea-salted windowpanes. Elias was the architect of the life I had fled, a world of high-stakes corporate espionage and moral compromises that I had traded for the simple peace of a baker’s life.

For a moment, the scent of old paper was replaced by the phantom smell of rain on hot asphalt and expensive cologne. My mind raced through the possibilities. Had I left a trail? Or had the “company” simply decided that my retirement was a breach of contract they could no longer overlook?

“How did you find me?” I managed to ask, my voice steadier than I felt.

Elias smiled, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “You’re a creature of habit. You always said that if the world became too loud, you’d find a place where the only noise was the tide.” He stepped closer, his presence shrinking the room. “But the world is getting very loud again, Julian. The project we started in Zurich... It’s been compromised. They think you took the decryption keys with you.”

The weight of the accusation hung in the air. I hadn’t taken the keys; I had destroyed them to ensure no one could use that technology again. But in Elias’s world, destruction was a myth everyone assumed someone was holding out for a better price.

As the shop bell chimed and a young mother walked in with her toddler, the contrast between my two worlds became unbearable. I looked at my flour-dusted apron and then at Elias’s cold, calculating gaze.

“I don't have what they want,” I whispered.

“Then you’d better come with me and convince them,” Elias replied, gesturing toward the door where a black sedan sat idling at the curb. “Because if I found you, the others aren’t far behind.”
