Solution
- Gutenberg invented it by designing his innovation around existing technology.
- He used an olive press as a basis for the printing press, and moulds were used to cast the metal letters of the alphabet.
- By 1448, he had mastered his system. Gutenberg created metal types for all 26 characters of the Roman alphabet. He invented a method of moving them around to form new words in the text. This became known as the movable type printing machine.
- It remained the core print technology for the next 300 years.
- The Gutenberg press could produce 250 sheets on one side each hour.
- The Bible was the first book he printed. It took three years to print 180 copies, which was considered fast production at the time.
