The Ganga River originates from the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 6,600 meters and is formed by the union of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi at Devaprayag. It flows for 2,525 km, with 2,415 km in India and 110 km in Bangladesh. The Ganga basin covers an area of 861,404 sq km. After Farakka, the river flows into Bangladesh, where it is called the Padma. It merges with the Brahmaputra (Jamuna) and Meghna before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.
