Solution

  • Starch and glucose are found in maize, a significant coarse grain. The main purpose of this is as animal feed. Poor people also utilise maize as food.
  • Maize is the third most important food grain in India after rice and wheat.
  • It is a kharif crop, sown in June – July and harvested in September – October, though it is also grown as a rabi and zaid crop in some areas.
  • Requires a warm climate, with temperatures between 21°C to 27°C and moderate rainfall (50 – 100 cm).
  • Grows well in well-drained alluvial and black soils.
