Solution
Ozone depletion refers to the thinning of the ozone layer in the stratosphere caused mainly by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). These CFCs, released from products like aerosol sprays and refrigerators, release chlorine atoms under UV radiation that destroy ozone molecules, leading to a weakened protective layer. This depletion results in increased ultraviolet radiation reaching Earth, causing health issues like skin cancer and environmental damage. The most significant ozone depletion is observed over Antarctica, known as the “ozone hole.” International efforts such as the Montreal Protocol have been successful in reducing CFC emissions to protect and restore the ozone layer.
