The Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) was established on July 19, 1908, in London during the Olympic Games. It was formed through the collaboration of eight national federations: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, and Sweden. As of January 2018, under the leadership of Dr. Julio C. Maglione, FINA included 209 national member federations from all five continents.
Main objectives of FINA are as follows:
- To support and promote the growth of aquatic sports globally in every possible way.
- To ensure that aquatic sports are fair and free from drug use.
- To encourage international cooperation and relationships through aquatics.
- To involve participants of all ages, genders, and backgrounds in aquatic disciplines worldwide.
- To establish standardised rules and conduct competitions in Swimming, Open Water Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Synchronised Swimming, High Diving, and Masters.
- To organise and manage World Championships and other FINA competitions.
- To improve aquatic facilities globally with assistance from various organisations.
- To engage in additional activities that help in developing aquatic sports.
