2. When sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from fossil fuels combine with water vapor, they form dilute acids that fall back to the earth as acid rain.
3. This rain increases soil acidity, causing massive forest destruction and the formation of dead lakes where fish and frogs can no longer survive.
4. It is highly corrosive and causes permanent damage to historical monuments, statues, and buildings made of stone or metal.
