The structure generally begins with sports clubs, which form district sports associations. These become part of state sports associations, which together form national sports federations. National federations are affiliated with international sports federations.
National federations organise competitions and championships, identify talented players and promote sports at different levels. International Sports Federations (IFs) are recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and govern their respective sports at the international level. They ensure proper organisation of competitions, development of athletes, adherence to rules and fair play.
