Solution

Rural settlement patterns in India and Brazil reflect starkly different geographical, cultural, and historical settings. Rural populations are numerous and widespread in India, holding roughly 65% of the country’s population in tightly concentrated villages. These settlements have historically depended on intense agriculture, natural water sources, and strong social or caste-based communal systems. In contrast, rural Brazil has a far lower population density and a more dispersed settlement pattern, while more than 85% of Brazilians live in cities. Brazilian rural life is dominated by massive, large-scale commercial estates (latifundia) that specialise in livestock ranching and agriculture, notably in the Cerrado and interior plains. While Indian rural areas have a high person density and intensive smallholder farming, rural Brazil is distinguished by vast spatial expanses, mechanised agriculture, and sparse, scattered homesteads.
