The extraction of highly reactive metals like potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and aluminium (Al) refers to the processing of elements situated near the top of the reactivity series. Because these specific metals possess a much stronger affinity and attraction for oxygen than carbon does, their corresponding metal oxides are exceptionally stable. Consequently, carbon,the most common reducing agent,is completely unable to strip the oxygen away from these oxides to liberate the free metals. To overcome this, highly reactive metals must be extracted through the electrolytic reduction of their molten chlorides or oxides. This specialized reduction process is achieved by driving an electric current directly through the compound in its liquefied or molten state, a method fundamentally known as electrolysis.
