Modern field hockey developed in the British Isles in the 19th century and was introduced to India by British Army regiments. Hockey soon became popular, and the first Indian hockey club was established in Calcutta in 1885–86; clubs later followed in Bombay and Punjab. The Indian men’s team made its Olympic debut at the 1928 Amsterdam Games and won gold without conceding a goal. From 1928 to 1956, India won six consecutive Olympic gold medals and 24 consecutive matches. This period is remembered as a golden era, with players such as Dhyan Chand becoming celebrated for their exceptional skill.
