Solution

A frame of reference is the background of experiences, knowledge, and social norms that shapes how a person perceives and reacts to stimuli. It determines the nature of one’s attitude toward people, objects, or situations.

Attitudes are not formed in a vacuum; they are influenced by past experiences, family beliefs, and group norms. For example, in a study, poor boys developed a positive attitude toward cheap sweets because their frame of reference was poverty. In contrast, rich boys showed a negative attitude toward the same sweets due to their frame of reference being wealth.

According to Sherif, in the absence of established norms, individuals create their own social norms, influenced by their reference frames. Once a social norm is formed, it strongly influences behavior and becomes a shared understanding for communication and perception within a group.

In short, a frame of reference helps explain why people interpret and respond differently to the same situation based on their personal and social background.
