Solution
Attribution is an important part of social perception, which is how we understand and interpret other people’s behavior. When we see someone acting in a certain way, we try to figure out why they behaved like that. This process is called attribution.
We usually explain behavior in two ways:
- Internal (personal) causes: such as mood, personality, or intentions.
- External (situational) causes: such as environment, social pressure, or accidents.
For example, if a student is late to class, we might think they are lazy (internal), or we might think the bus was late (external).
Attribution helps us understand people, but we often make mistakes. These mistakes are called attributional biases:
- Fundamental Attribution Error: Blaming the person instead of the situation.
- Self-Serving Bias: Taking credit for success, but blaming failure on others.
- False Consensus Effect: Believing that others think like us.
So, attribution is a mental shortcut that helps us understand others in social situations, but it can sometimes lead to wrong judgments.
