The Zn, ZnO curve is below the CO, CO2 curve in the Ellingham diagram. This suggests that ΔG° is less negative for the creation of CO2 from CO than it is for the formation of ZnO from Zn. Therefore, a very high temperature may be needed for the reduction process if CO is utilised as a reducing agent. For this reason, reduction with CO is not used to extract zinc from ZnO.
