Why is it easier to tear a branch of tree by pulling it from its far end, rather than close to the trunk of tree?

The branch turns or bends about its attachment to the trunk. Pulling at its far end increases the perpendicular distance between the applied force and this turning point. Since moment of force equals force multiplied by this distance, the pull produces a greater turning effect and bends the branch more easily. Pulling close to the trunk gives a smaller moment.
