Solution
When sugar is added to boiling water, it dissolves and forms a solution. Sugar is a non-volatile solute, so it lowers the vapour pressure of water. Because of this decrease in vapour pressure, the boiling point of the solution increases. The water stops boiling temporarily until the temperature rises to this new, higher boiling point.
