The term ‘Sepoy Mutiny’ was rejected by many historians after Indian Independence because it gives the impression that only a small group of Indian soldiers rebelled for personal or military reasons. In reality, the Revolt of 1857 was a much larger uprising involving soldiers, farmers, landlords, rulers, and ordinary people from different parts of India. They came together to oppose British rule, exploitation, and oppression. Therefore, calling it only a “mutiny” does not fully represent the widespread nature of the revolt and its importance in India’s struggle for freedom.
