Solution
The most destructive seismic waves are the surface waves (also called L waves). These waves travel along the earth’s surface, have the highest amplitude, and cause the greatest destruction during an earthquake. The particles in these waves move in a circular path, producing strong ground shaking that leads to collapse of buildings and other damages. P waves and S waves are body waves that travel inside the earth, but they are less destructive compared to surface waves because their amplitude is lower and they do not cause as intense ground shaking on the surface.
