Solution
The earth’s crust has been divided into three layers. The arrangement of these horizons is called soil profile.
- Uppermost layer: This is the topsoil. It is dark in color and rich in humus, minerals, and organic materials. It promotes plant growth.
- Middle layer: It is found beneath the subsoil and contains less humus while being rich in minerals such as iron oxide, clay, and soluble salts.
- Lowest layer: This is the bedrock layer (C-horizon) of soil. It is made up of partially weathered rock and forms the foundation for the soil profile.
