The aims of Panchsheel (the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence) were:
- Mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty: This principle emphasised the importance of respecting each nation's borders and sovereignty without interference.
- Mutual non-aggression: It called for nations to avoid hostile actions and to resolve differences through peaceful means rather than through conflict.
- Mutual non-interference in each other’s internal affairs: This principle advocated for countries to refrain from interfering in the domestic matters of other nations.
- Equality and mutual benefit: It promoted the idea of equality between nations and the importance of benefiting mutually from cooperation.
- Peaceful coexistence: The ultimate goal was to encourage peaceful relationships between countries, regardless of their political systems, and to work together for the common good of humanity.
Panchsheel was initially outlined in the agreement between India and China in 1954 and became a foundation for the Non-Aligned Movement.
