Solution

The result of the Naga referendum conducted in May 1951 indicated that an overwhelming 99% of the Naga people supported independence from India. Despite this, the Indian government and the Naga National Council (NNC) called for a sovereign Naga state. The Indian government rejected the result of the referendum, refusing to acknowledge it as a legitimate expression of the Naga people’s will. This led to increased tensions and eventually to a prolonged insurgency in the region.
