Solution

Tin, lead, bismuth, mercury, and other metals with low melting points are refined using this process. A furnace’s sloping hearth is used to gently heat the impure metal to a temperature that is slightly higher than its melting point. After melting and sliding down the hearth’s slope, the metal is collected in a receiver that is placed at the other end of the hearth. On the hearth, the solid impurities remain.
