Solution

To get the expression we should subtract 3x + 6y from 5x + 8y

5x + 8y – (3x + 6y) = 5x + 8y + (– 3x – 6y)

= 5x + 8y – 3x – 6y

= (5 – 3)x + (8 – 6)y

= 2x + 2y

So 2x + 2y should be added.
