Solution

No. Many countries that gained independence came under one-party, military or authoritarian rule, and some found it difficult to restore democracy. India’s achievement was choosing free and fair elections and universal adult franchise from the beginning, despite poverty, illiteracy and the challenges of nation-building. The 1952 election showed that democracy could work in such conditions.
